Open Church Discovery Days
St Mary the Virgin, Hall Road, Belchamp Walter, Sudbury, Essex, CO10 7AT
Discover one of North Essex’s most atmospheric rural churches, set in a peaceful landscape of fields and ancient trees. St Mary’s has appeared on screen in Lovejoy and, more recently, as the wedding venue in the opening of Downton Abbey: A New Era, making it a favourite stop for visitors who enjoy film locations as much as historic architecture.
Inside, you’ll find newly restored medieval wall paintings—rare survivals that offer a vivid glimpse into centuries of local faith, craftsmanship and storytelling. Their colours and details, hidden for generations, can now be appreciated once again.
During Heritage Open Days, visitors can also enjoy guided tower tours, offering wonderful views across the surrounding countryside. Down below, the pop‑up café will be serving teas, coffees and light lunches throughout the day, making St Mary’s an inviting place to pause, explore and enjoy.
Whether you come for the history, the art, the filming connections or simply the tranquillity of the setting, St Mary’s offers a warm welcome in a truly exceptional corner of Essex.
