Our Gruesome Heritage event takes place in East Budleigh’s Salem Chapel, a dissenters chapel built in 1719. Focussing on local disasters, the exhibition shows how the people of East Budleigh have endured great hardship in past times. You can discover the story of East Budleigh’s experience with the Plague and the Black Death of 1348, a catastrophic bubonic plague outbreak that decimated the local population but inadvertently triggered a subsequent era of economic prosperity. You can learn about the pillage of East Budleigh when after an extraordinary historical event, the village successful petitioned the King and were granted a very rare reprieve of taxes. There are stories too of numerous local shipwrecks and daring rescues.
