A walk taking in the prehistoric earthworks and their contexts Randwick Woods, Stroud

Join prehistory lover, tour guide and author Tim Prevett on a guided tour of three prehistoric earthworks in Randwick Woods. A Neolithic Long Barrow, Bronze Age Round Barrows, and an extensive Iron Age Cross Dyke. Taking in their contexts of the types of monument they are, their place in the landscape, and others nearby. Views across to Haresfield Beacon and Selsley. The woods are a marvel on every visit and the views awe-inspiring. The walk also considers the impact of increased recreational use of the woods and impacts upon the ancient earthworks.

The walk consists of rough gravel tracks and woodland paths, suitable footwear strongly recommended. There are some drops. In the event of strong winds forecasted the walk will be cancelled due to potential wood falling from trees.

The walk takes place on land managed by The National Trust. While it is not organised by them it is done with the awareness of the local Area Ranger.

Location & directions

Randwick Woods, Robbers Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL6 6JL

Directions:
Meeting on the Robbers Road track which cuts across the long Iron Age Cross Dyke, a short distance walk from two free car parks. Grid refence SO 82706 07070. What3Words mountains.pure.basket is on the track near the dyke. Ash Lane car park to the west is up a long single car's width track. Walk from the car park east along the main track. The other car park to the east is adjacent the main Gloucester Road close to Penrose Close. Walk from there along the main track west. Both car parks can get full, especially on good-weather weekends. If you are able enough for a mile continuous uphill walk that is the distance from Cashes Green. Given the limited parking at each site is why the tour starts about the same distance from each. Should you end up parking at Haresfield Beacon car park for a longer walk to the tour, charges apply at that car park.
