Prior's Field School

Originally called Prior's Garth, Prior's Field was built in 1900 for a Charterhouse schoolmaster who never occupied it. It was purchased by Julia Huxley who opened it as a 'high class school for girls' in 1902.

Visitors will see much of the original house which is still in use by the school today. The house was designed when Voysey was at the pinnacle of his career. It is an attractive, homely house, and with considered very modern when it was built. The building is typical of Voysey's work with cottage-style characteristics and roughcast exterior walls, steeply pitched roofs and prominent chimneys. Inside the house, they will see the Oak Hall with its fine, dominant staircase, panelling and deep tiled fireplace exemplifying Voysey's austere but cosy style. Many of Voysey's favourite motifs of hearts and birds are evident on the fire surrounds, air vents and door furniture throughout the building and have been incorporated into the school's crest.
