Pulborough Heritage Visitor Centre “Swan Corner”
Macklins @ The Riverside, Swan Bridge, Pulborough, West Sussex, RH20 2BJ
The Swan Corner area was the “Service Station” of the horse drawn era since the old Swan Bridge was built in 1787, and eventually by-passed in 1936.
The 1900 era “Service Station” area is shown, and its story told, with period pictures of the Swan Hotel, the Harness Maker, the Blacksmith and Farrier, a Hay and Grain Barn, The Corn Exchange and visitors enjoying themselves. There is an on-hand guide who will show you what survives and what had moved on to support todays society.
The Visitor Centre also houses the five-metre-long model of the Railway Station and Shunting Yard as in 1910. This amazing model accurately shows the large complex of the railway at that time, by then extended to the coast and a branch line to Midhurst and a large shunting yard to export local produce to London, heavy goods to Pulborough. By this time the railway and station had made the Wey and Arun Canal redundant and Pulborough became a destination for Londoners and other visitors. There is an on-hand guide who will show you the functions of all the buildings etc on the model.
