Put That Light Out—Wartime Law in the Berwick Area

  • 14 Sep 2025
  • Online event
  • Pre-booking required

During the Second World War, the local population faced the rigours of food and fuel rationing, restrictions on travel and freedom, and other irritations. These were usually applied with varying degrees of effectiveness but not always.

Join local historian, Phil Rowett to find out how people found a way round these. This talk starts on the day war broke out but ends with a description of the events that led to a stolen ambulance being stopped by police gunfire at the Scotsgate in 1946.

The examples given all occurred within the local area and can be taken as a reflection of the typical experience of all those on the Home Front 1939-45.
