Talk about the history of the cottages and their current use as a Housing Co-operative followed by a walk around the exterior of the cottages.

Railway Cottages, Spencer Street was one of a number of streets built by the LNWR to house their workers in the 1860s. It contained twenty-four houses, twenty small houses for the workers and their families, and four large houses for the foremen. It fell into disrepair and all the remaining streets were demolished in the 1950s.

MKDC decided to keep one street for heritage purposes. This coincided with a request from a group of people looking for property to set up a Housing Co-operative. It was agreed that the street would be suitable for this purpose. Rainbow Housing Co-Operative was set up in 1978 and is still going strong forty plus years later. It houses about thirty adults and some children.
