A selection of rare books will be on display in the library for anyone to come and view including Milton's 'Paradise Lost', 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte and 'The Plymouth Weekly Journal' (1724).

The Plymouth Proprietary Library has recently had their rare books, manuscripts and archives catalogued by two dedicated volunteers. Items on display will include a first edition of John Milton's 'Paradise List' (1669), and a third edition of Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' (1848) under the pseudonym 'Currer Bell'.

Also on display will be 'The Plymouth Weekly Journal'. Established in 1718 by William Kent and managed by Elizabeth Kent from 1719 to 1725, the PWJ was Plymouth's first newspaper. It ceased publication in 1725, leaving a near century-long void before another local paper emerged. It relayed London news and local shipping updates and included advertisements.
