Restoration of the Priory

St. Nicholas Priory, The Mint, Exeter, Devon, EX4 3BL

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

This event is a HoD Guided tour showing the restoration of St Nicholas' Priory, and shall talk about physical and cultural changes to do with the location, and those involved in this historic process.

Come visit St Nicholas Priory for a special Heritage Open Day guided tour showing how the ancient monastery , which in the Victorian era fell into disrepair and was described as 'a mere rookery of tenements' was saved. This tour will talk about not only what physical changes took place during the 1912-16 restoration, but also discuss the various people who were involved, such as the Architects, the Town Clerk and even the Mayor of the time. All these steered the project through the difficult days of the First World War which at times threatened the project entirely.
