From magazine ad to counter card, beer mat to poster, the Richard Roberts Archive is digging into its collection to mark how everyday products, particularly from the twentieth century, were advertised.

Welcome, Heritage Open Days explorers!

In a trip down memory lane, we will dig deep into our advertising archive to explore the evolution of everyday products. From washing powder to televisions, groceries to motor cars, the nature of the everyday changed with technological development and rising disposable incomes. What was unattainable for one generation became indispensable for the next. In creating these markets, advertising could make the mundane glamorous, even iconic.

To illustrate this, a talk will be presented three times: 11.00, 1.00 and 3.00. This will demonstrate how everyday products are promoted, glamorised and made indispensable. There will be opportunities to handle advertising materials of all sorts: from paper advertising to three-dimensional product placement.

Our trustee team will be on hand with guided tours of the archive on demand, and to chat about our exciting volunteer opportunities. We will have our usual popup cafe and, this year, there will also be a sale of duplicate advertising pieces from our archive - so come on down to bag yourself a unique item of advertising history!

Open 1000 - 1630 (last admission 1600).
