1000 – 1800 Royal Hotel Barnstaple Street EX39 4AE – visit this Grade 1 listed building with its long complex history. It has been a high-class residence, tobacco warehouse, prison, workhouse and hotel. The earliest building on the site was Colonial House, built in 1688 for tobacco merchant John Davie. The hotel, opened in 1889, was built by the Heard family with its own railway platform, large refreshment room and stabling for 55 horses. Visit the Kingsley Room on first floor to see the ornate plaster ceiling created by John Abbott. In the bar, known in WWII as the green room, during the build-up to D-Day it was said ‘more secrets have been discussed in this room than any other hotel in England’. No pre-booking required.
