Selly Oak Quaker Meeting House

Selly Oak Quaker Meeting is opening for Heritage Open Day visitors in 2026, 100 years after it was built. Take a break and enjoy a drink and light refreshments whilst exploring this historic building and discovering the everyday histories of Quakers past and present. We will have dressing up and craft activities for children and a treasure trail around the garden.

The garden offers a wonderful location for play and relaxation. It contains a wooded copse with a bonfire circle, a swing and orchard and a large main lawn. For 50 years there was a tennis court beside the car park and we hope to offer children's tennis and badminton on the main lawn if weather permits.

Edward and Dorothy Cadbury donated land and funds for the building and the garden. This peaceful garden and the quiet simplicity of the triangular white Neo-Georgian style building offered a calmer setting for worship than the busy Selly Oak Institute where Quakers had previously met for worship. Inside the Meeting House the main hall has fine exposed roof timbers with wood panelled walls and parquet floors. Original benches still sit on a raised dais around the edge of the hall.

Exhibitions in the main hall will share stories of past and present Quakers and the causes that they have champione over the years.

Directions:

Selly Oak Quaker Meeting is located at the end of a drive on the Bristol Road in Selly Oak, opposite St Mary's Church. There is a blue Quakers sign at the entrance to the drive. There are bike lockers on site. Bus numbers 61, 63, X20, X21, 11A and 11C have stops on the main Selly Oak crossroads a short 200m walk away. Selly Oak railway station is the closest train station 0.5 miles down the Bristol Road towards the centre of Birmingham. Parking is available but limited so we encourage you walk, cycle or visit by public transport.

Accessibility details

The front entrance is accessed via two steps with hand rails on both sides and a wheelchair accessible ramp is located down the right side of the building. There is easy level access to the orchard garden and good woodchip covered paths from the car park through the woodland and bonfire area or a gentle sloped path providing access to the main lawn.
