Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Oldham – Celebrating Heritage and Community
Founded in 1977 on Lee Street, Oldham, Shree Swaminarayan Mandir has been a cornerstone for the local Hindu community. As families from Gujarat, especially Kutch, settled in Oldham during the late 1960s due to the cotton mill industry, the Mandir (Temple) became a vital place for worship and community gathering.
Over time, it expanded its role, introducing a Gujarati school, and a sports club offering pool, snooker, table tennis, and darts, with local youth often representing the region. As the community grew, the temple acquired neighbouring buildings to accommodate its activities.
In 2017, the Mandir purchased a larger site on Copster Hill Road, designing a modern temple that blended traditional Hindu elements with local architecture. Fit out and finishing work was completed by volunteers aged 10 to 65, the new temple officially opened in August 2022.
The new facility includes a prayer hall, multi-function space, playground, garden, and greenhouse, offering classes in tabla, drums, and piano, and hosting Zumba, badminton, basketball and blood donation drives.
In the past three years, the Mandir has partnered with local charities such as Maggie’s, Sahali Group, and Presents for Children. It recently began a two-year collaboration with Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, leading into its 50th anniversary in 2027.
