Visit Smallhythe Place this year for Heritage Open Days! Once a Roman encampment, medieval shipyard, a working farm, and later the home of Victorian actress Dame Ellen Terry, Smallhythe Place is full of charm and history.

Visit Smallhythe Place, a museum within a home created by Edy Craig to celebrate the life of her mother Ellen Terry. The house is a combination of rooms maintained as if Ellen has just left them, and object displays of Ellen's many theatrical props, books, and costumes.
Don't miss our 'Styling Smallhythe' display, charting the evolution of women’s fashion from the late 1800s into the 1900s.

Once you have seen the house, take a walk through the apple orchards and nuttery to see the writing hut used Christopher St. John just below the house she shared with Edy Craig and Clare Atwood.

Round out your visit by visiting the on site café and the famed Barn Theatre, built within the 17th century barn in 1929. There is a regular programme of performances each summer, and is always worth a visit.
