Somerville College

Somerville College was established in 1879 to enable women to receive an Oxford education 41 years before women were awarded degrees by the university. Originally called Somerville Hall, adopting the title 'college' in 1894, Somerville became a full college of the university in 1959. During its almost 150 years of history, hundreds of people have worked for the college in academic and support roles. This year we celebrate the contribution of our staff to the success of the college through the ages, with information and images of a by-gone era displayed alongside those of today. There will also be an opportunity to explore the history of the college through an exhibition, and a Teddy Trail for younger visitors.

Accessibility details

Access to the college is, in the main, level or via ramps, with a few gentle inclines to negotiate. Steps can be avoided for the majority of a visit, except where refreshments will be served, (which is up two flights of steps), and access to the library where the exhibition is being held is via a different route. There is an accessible toilet available towards the front of the college.

2026 'Everyday Histories' Theme: Information boards will be available around the college to celebrate the role of staff in the college, both historically and currently. Children's event: Teddy Trail - find the teddy bears dotted around the site for a small prize. Refreshments for sale / donations.
