In the late Medieval period the land was held by lord of the manor William Digby.
He was charged with depopulating the village 1605 by the Attorney General in the Court of the Star Chamber but died before the case could be heard.
In 1875 an Iron Foundry was set up nearby and the few remaining buildings were destroyed.
During this time a farmer discovered 16 important Bronze Age objects dated to 1,000 to 800 BC.
The finds are known as The Welby Hoard & located in Melton Carnegie Museum.
Pre 1960 maps indicate the ruins of Welby Hall which was demolished in 1961 due to its unsafe condition.
The actual siting of the medieval manor is still subject to discussion but annual investigations are taking place which are focusing on what is believed to be the site of the old kitchen garden & ancillary buildings.
Today the church is supported by a loyal congregation, holds services once a month and opens to welcome visitors with events several times a year.

- The church is situated in an isolated rural location about two miles north of the centre of Melton Mowbray, off the A606 Nottingham Road & St Bartholomew's Way. If using Sat Nav the post code will take you to the entrance to an industrial site, the church is signposted Welby Church, turn right at the bottom of St. Bartholomew's Way just before the gates. It is located about half a mile along the road, easily visible on the right hand side.

Accessibility details
The church gateway has two steps and one shallow step down into the church. We have a car park opposite the church for off street parking & limited parking near the gate for disabled visitors.
Additional information
We will have on display our History Boards telling the story of Welby Village in Medieval times & additional display material showing the area's more recent Industrial past.
