St James Church Swimbridge, a beautiful Grade 1 Listed building, one of the best in Devon with a fantastic medieval screen. font and .restored pulpit and will be open all day, 10.00am -4.00pm for visitors...it normally is, to welcome visitors ...but on our Heritage Open Day there will be expert guides to show you all the special features , sometimes missed.
This year we will be running guided tours and talks around the churchyard where over the centuries many hundreds of local people have been laid to rest.
In the older parts of the churchyard are some ancient beautifully carved gravestones some with poignant texts. Probably most famous person buried here is our Victorian vicar , Rev John Russell , breeder of the first Jack Russell Terrier. Inside the church are some more important citizens commemorated . But by far the majority of those here are ordinary people, who lived and worked in the parish, and many children who died so young.
We are appealing to local families who have stories to be told of typical, but always interesting , members of their families buried here.
Churchyard tours will run from 10.30am - 12.00pm, with the church open from 10.00am -4.00pm with guides on hand.
