St James Church Taunton
St James Church, St James Street, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 1JS
Come and explore our church building, which has seen many changes in its history which stretch back over nine centuries.
The church tower, which celebrated its 150th last year since being rebuilt, will be open. It is 120 feet high and has a commanding view of the town and the surrounding area. There are 8 bells, the oldest of which dates back to 1610. Tower tours will happen throughout the day. Each tour will last about 30-40 minutes. (See notes on age limits and accessibility. Only children over 8 are permitted to climb for safety and insurance reasons). BUT we have a virtual tower tour for anyone unable to climb the tower.
Research is ongoing about the 850 year history of the church and the people who were and are part of the church's life. Displays will be available which give information about the lives of some of these characters from the past, especially the ordinary everyday folk. The architecture of the church has developed as the town and its people have grown and changed, and guides from the past and recent times will be on hand to tell you more.
Light refreshments will be available, and there will be a children's activity corner. Visitors will be welcome to visit our ongoing re-wilding eco project in the churchyard.
