St John the Evangelist Church, Hurst
Kings Road, Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, OL6 8EZ
St John the Evangelist is the only Anglican place of worship in the Parish of Hurst. It was consecrated by the first bishop of Manchester in 1849. Oldham Whittaker, a local mill owner funded the building of the church. Edwin Hugh Shellard was the original architect and designed it in a stripped perpendicular style, typical of its period, and is constructed in local sandstone, with a slate roof.
The north and south transepts, Whittaker Chapel, tower and spire, a significant local landmark, were added in 1862. This architect was George Shaw of Saddleworth and the unique dark oak reredos, panelling and artefacts, as well as the stained-glass windows, are all his work.
