The Church of St John the Evangelist, Sandown, is a striking Victorian parish church built in 1880–1881 by the architect C L Luck in the Early English style. Located at the junction of St John’s Road and Carter Street, it is one of the largest buildings in Sandown, with seating for over 600 worshippers. The church is built of coursed rubble with pantiled roofs and features a nave and chancel in one, north and south aisles, and a distinctive octagonal shingled spirelet on the roof between the nave and chancel. The west front has tall lancet windows and tall buttresses, and the spacious interior is supported by large arches on circular columns. Notable internal features include an octagonal font with trefoil decoration, an elaborate octagonal stone lectern of 1903 with a carved figure of a saint and marble columns, and an east wall arcaded with six large trefoliated stained glass windows. The church also contains St Nicholas’s Chapel, a Lady Chapel, and vestries off the chancel. It is home to a fine pipe organ by Henry Willis, installed in 1881. The church is Grade II listed for its architectural and historic interest.
