Join us at St John’s, Upper Hopton, as we celebrate 25 years of the stunning Millennium Window - designed and painted by local artists, Anne and Vince Seabourne, and the exciting heritage tower repair project, partly completed last year.

St. John the Evangelist, consecrated in 1846, is an attractive mock Gothic church designed by Bonomi and Cory, is at the heart of the village of Upper Hopton, and stands next to a late Jacobean manor house, Hopton Hall.

The Chancel, remains much as it was when designed in 1846. The screen separating the chancel from the nave was part of the original structure, though the Rood and Christus, were added in 1951. The choir stalls are the original ones designed by Bonomi and Cory. The floor tiles are probably Minton, and are dated 1844.

The stained glass windows all of interest, were installed over the century with the last one, the Millennium window, designed and painted local artists, Anne and Vince Seabourne.

In 1900, the angels in the Chancel on each side of the altar and five paintings, were designed and painted by J. Eadie Reid with students from Batley College of Art.

In 2015 the pews from the north aisle were removed to make way for a much needed toilet, kitchen and meeting room.

After years of severe frosts, the outer wall of the tower was bulging on the south and west sides and was in danger of collapse. Monolith Builders, and Brian Jones Structural Engineer, were commissioned in January 2024 to tackle the project and work was completed in the autumn.

During the course of this work the west window was dismantled and placed into storage and now needs considerable repair work before it is re-installed.
