St. Katherine's Heritage Weekend
St. Katherine's Church, Buttery Lane, Teversal Village, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, NG17 3JN
Betjeman once described Teversal Village as a 'rural oasis' in the former 'coal producing area on the Notts - Derby border'. Over the weekend of 19th-21st September we will be celebrating the rich history of the area including the local mining and farming communities, as well as it's close links with the Carnarvon family and D.H. Lawrence.
The church will be open to visitors every day from 10am - 4pm. On display will be photographs, information and stories about the history of the area, alongside an exhibition of wedding dresses through the decades; all on loan from brides who were married in the church. On the Friday evening we will celebrate the village's links with the 5th Earl of Carnarvon with a talk about Egyptology and on Saturday there will be coffee morning in the Manor Room, to compliment the exhibition. On Sunday there will be the opportunity to join a 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' walk, which showcases the landscape that inspired Lawrence to write his novel. Wragby Hall is based on the village's Manor House, as is his village of Tevershall based on Teversal.
Throughout the weekend, there will be local people in church providing refreshments and guiding you around the points of interest, unless you wish to explore alone. The church is 12th century and full of history, including the Norman doorway, Molyneaux family hatchments and monuments.
Entry is free, but we appreciate donations for refreshments or to our appeal to fix the chancel roof.
