The ancient parish church of St Margaret's Darenth will be open throughout the day for visitors, with an exhibition of historical information, refreshments, children's activities, and live organ music.

St Margaret's is a Grade I listed parish church featuring ancient Anglo-Saxon architcture, sturdy Norman developments, and decorative medieval wall paintings. It is one of the oldest churches in the country.

The church will be open from 9am to 4pm for visitors to explore. Guide books are available to purchase, and welcomers available to talk to. An exhibition of historical information will unpack some of the church's history throughout the ages, from its ancient roots to the present day. Refreshments are available throughout the day. Additionally there is a cooked breakfast available between 9am and 10.30am, and a light lunch available between 12pm and 1.30pm. From 2pm there will be background live organ music. Toys are available for small children to play with and craft activities on offer for slightly older ones. Merchandise also available to purchase. We're looking forward to welcoming you to Darenth's ancient church!

Location & directions

Darenth Hill, Dartford, Kent, DA2 7QY

Directions:
St Margaret's is set back from the road so you can't easily see it on the approach. Instead look out for the war memorial: this is just in front of the entrance to the churchyard, so if you've found the war memorial, you've found us. The war memorial is just beyond the brow of the hill and on the left if coming from Darenth, or just before the brow of the hill and on the right if coming from Sutton-at-Hone/Hawley, just after the Fresh Service depot turning. There is parking available around the war memorial, on the gravelled area signposted "Darenth Court Farm", and by The Chequers pub on nearby Darenth Road South.

Access into the church via the main entrance involves two steps; however there is step-free access by following the path round to the right of the church, coming into the adjoining extension, and then from there into the church via a gentle ramp. There is unfortunately no step-free access into the chancel.
