St Mary and St Margaret is at first sight a Georgian style church, one of the very few remaining in Birmingham. The church has a secret, however! Come and discover the Church within a Church and learn more about its past.

St Mary and St Margaret is the parish church for Castle Bromwich but was originally the private chapel to Castle Bromwich Hall. It is located in the Conservation area of Castle Bromwich comprising Castle Bromwich Hall, Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens and the church. The current church is Grade 1 listed and is an attractive red brick building with stone facings built in the English Renaissance style, between 1726 and 1731, comprising a chancel, nave and bell tower. The internal decoration is Georgian with fine ceiling mouldings and decoration. There is more to the church than meets the eye, however, as the church hides a secret within it.
Take a tour of the church and learn about its history and that of the family who built it. There will be opportunities to climb the bell tower to see the bell chamber, the roof space and weather permitting, the top of the tower with a view across Castle Bromwich and the surrounding areas. (Please note that the tower steps are narrow and steep and sturdy footwear is required.)
Refreshments will be available on all days. The church is accessible on the ground floor and there are accessible toilets and baby change areas available in the Community Hall.
On the Sunday there will be a “Songs of Praise” style service featuring local histories and everyone is invited to dress up in Georgian, Edwardian or Victorian costumes or hats. This will be followed by a Heritage Fayre, refreshments and children’s activities.
