The church has had many redesigns in its history from the original 12th century wooden structure to the existing stone walls and slate roof.
The Norman origins can be seen in the 13th century round chancel arch and nave the strange round-headed windows in the eastern gable.
Both gables of the nave show evidence of different roof structures. The nave aisles with their pointed arches are 13th century modifications. The different sized pillars suggest that the aisles were built at different times. The clerestories were added in 15th century
The imposing tower and spire date from 14th century and are unique for a High Wolds church and are visible from all directions as you come to Huggate. The church and spire nestled in the village have been the subject of two of David Hockney’s paintings.
The Windows- the aisle windows are glazed with Cathedral glass. The chancel window’s stained glass is a memorial to James Christie, by Mr Hodgson of York, showing parts of Christ’s story. The west window was given by Mr E Holtby, late of Haywold in memory of his wife Hetty, portraying Christ’s home life.
The Font – is the oldest fixture in the church dating from 15th century, but fixed to bases from different periods.
The Porch – was installed in the 19th century.
