St Mary's Church, Longworth, Tower and Bell restoration project
St Mary's Church, Church Lane, Longworth, Oxfordshire, OX13 5DY
As St Mary's is a grade 1 listed building a faculty was required before any work could be undertaken.
To celebrate the recent granting of the faculty we are mounting a display within the 13th Century Church of St. Mary's detailing the planned restoration and alterations to the structure of the 15th Century Tower and its bells.
Other than a few unsuccessful attempts the bells in St Mary's have not rung full circle for over 100 years. The original timber bell frame is unsafe and will be replaced by a new cast iron frame which will allow the bells to be augmented from 5 to 8 bells and includes the fitting of new sound control measures.
The Project encompasses urgent internal and external repairs to the Tower, including the crenellations, louvres stonework, outlet gutters and replacement of the internal floor of the bell chamber.

Wheelchair access is available at the rear of the church.
There will be a demonstration of "method ringing" of handbells during the event. Running at the same time and just a short walk from the Church is an exhibition in the Village Hall of "Longworth 1945", a free event capturing stories of Local residents and their families throughout World War 2, to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the War.
