St Mary’s Church Shenley Church End Open Day
St Mary's Church, Dudley Hill, Shenley Church End, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, MK5 6LL
A warm welcome awaits at St Mary’s Church Shenley. Our 800th year prompted an ongoing history project, the fruits of which are displayed on panels around the nave – tracking our history through the centuries, from the first recorded rector in 1223 to the present day.
Also available:
This year at 11am there will be a talk by David Noy who is a local historian and honorary archivist to the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society. He will be talking about Sarah Fyge Egerton (1688-1723), a poet and early feminist, who lived in Shenley and has several connections with the church. Allow about 1 hour for the talk.
A mini self-guided tour will introduce you to the many historic features of the church – artefacts, stained glass, architecture and memorials.
A video of our recent work to safeguard the bell housing gives a fascinating view into that rarely seen space above your heads.
A duck hunt for younger visitors is also popular.
We have a wealth of stories to share about the heroes of the village who died during WW1 and are remembered in the church, in the graveyard and on the village war memorial.
As part of this year’s theme – everyday histories – we will explore how life has changed over the centuries for the people of Shenley.
