The former St. Mary's church is normally closed to visitors so take the opportunity to explore this beautiful space and let us know if you have a connection to it.

St Mary’s is a Grade I listed, decommissioned church with a bossed medieval roof. It houses 72 monuments and cenotaphs dating from 16th - 20th century including the Gamul tomb.

A drop in zine (mini magazine) workshop will be available for visitors to the building as part of the 20,000 Women Zine Project. The project aims to collect stories about women and girls living in Cheshire in 2026. It seeks to redress the historic imbalance in archives, where women’s experiences have too often been overlooked or left out. For further info visit: Archives in Action:

Directions:
Entering Chester from any direction, look for the brown signs to Chester Castle or the Grosvenor Museum. Then follow blue pedestrian signs to St Mary’s Centre. The road ‘St Mary’s Hill’ is opposite The Golden Eagle pub.
