St Mary's Henbury
St Mary's, Church Close, Henbury, Bristol, BS10 7QF
St Mary's church is not only very decorative, but it's also full of fascinating history, which can be explored through the life stories of the generations of people connected to the church over hundreds of years. We are always finding out more about the stories of our past and learning to understand and learn from them, especially the stories which are challenging in our modern world, such as those around the lives connected with the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which was a big part of Henbury's (and Bristol's) history. The church also has some interesting 'queer' history, including an LGBT landmark grave in the churchyard, marking the final resting place of the 19th-century Egyptologist, Amelia Edwards. We are embarking on a project to find ways to make these stories more publicly accessible, and to interpret them afresh for 'our time' in ways that educate and provide opportunities for reflection for schools, community groups and the wider public.
Come along to our very first Heritage Open Day to explore and join us on this fascinating journey of discovery.
