St. Mary's Parish Church, West Horsley, Surrey
St/ Mary's Parish Church, Epsom Road, West Horsley, Leatherhead, Surrey, KT24 6TA
The building is constructed of chalk clunch, which is found in the locality. The size of the church is unusual for a small parish, suggestig that Thored was a generous patron. The patrons of St. Mary's over the centuries have been Lords of the Manor of West Horsley, owning the house and estate which now comprises West Horsley Place. They have contributed such architectural features as the Norman arches and north aisle, and the fine Tudor arches and south aisle. The chancel chapel is the burial place of the embalmed head of Sir Walter Raleigh: his son, Carew owned West Horsley Manor in the 1650s. The chapel also contains fine memorials to the Nicholas family, by Grinling Gibbons. St. Mary's also boasts oustanding wall paintings from the 12th century, featuring St. Christopher, and the crucifixion of Christ. The stained glass windows in the chantry date from the 12th century. There is a stained glass memorial to Sir James de Berners, dating from the mid 1300s, featuring Chiddingfold glass.
