St Mary's Church is a beautiful and ancient Grade I listed building, dating from approximately 1200 when the present chancel was built, although there is evidence of a church as early as 1086, including the font, which is used today.

When the Doomsday surveyors came to Marston in 1086, they found a new church, which was probably a simple rectangular building in stone with a thatched roof and was built by the priors of Tutbury who held the Manor of Marston under Henry de Ferrers. The only visible remains of this church are the font, which is now situated in the Bell Tower, and the top of a window, used in the building of the North Aisle.

The existing Church dates from 1200, with a Chancel comprising three lancet windows to the north and three lancet windows and a priest's door to the south. This would seem to be an addition to the Saxon Church, which would have been rebuilt at the same time to incorporate a North aisle.

There are 4 bells in the tower and one dating before the Reformation, probably from the latter half of the 14th century.

The church and tower will open on the Saturday, when tours of the tower can be booked on the day for Adults and Children over 8 years of age. On Sunday afternoon only the church will be open.

The church records will be available for viewing and the local History Society will have displays of local history for Marton on Dove and Hilton.

Stewards will be available to help and answer question.
