St Michael’s Churchyard Walk: The Lives Behind the Headstones
St. Michaels Church, Bell Street South, Brierley Hill, West Midlands, DY5 3EX
Step into St Michael’s historic churchyard and uncover the fascinating lives behind its headstones.
This guided daytime walk brings Brierley Hill’s history vividly to life through carefully researched stories of ordinary people who lived extraordinary lives. Hear about war heroes, industrial pioneers, tragic losses and curious mysteries, all shared with warmth, knowledge and humour in true Brierley Hill fashion.
More than a tour of graves, this is an opportunity to discover the people, events and personal histories woven into the town’s heritage. Each memorial offers a doorway into another chapter of Brierley Hill’s story, revealing lives whose influence reached through the local community and, in some cases, far beyond it.
The churchyard walks have become a firm favourite within the town’s Heritage Open Day programme. Previous visitors have described them as “informative and moving” and praised the “wonderful weaving of stories and histories”.
Perfect for anyone interested in genealogy, social history, local characters or simply hearing a good story told well.
The walk begins at 2pm and can be combined with a visit to St Michael’s Church, which is open from 10am until 3pm with tours, exhibitions and activities throughout the day.
