St Nicolas Church, 81 The Green, Kings Norton, Birmingham, West Midlands, B38 8RU
Our open days will allow visitor access to the church without your visit being affected by services or other formal church activities. Normally, the church is not open outside formal events.
St Nicolas’ Church is one of the oldest parish churches in Birmingham, and is Grade 1 listed. The first documented church on the site was in 1231, but there’s evidence of a Norman church built around 1150. The central nave was added in the early 13th century and the tower and spire in the 15th century. The 60 meter high spire could once be seen from the centre of Birmingham.
The church houses a fascinating range of features from across the centuries: Norman windows, a memorial plaque to the Rev Wilbert Awdry (who wrote Thomas theTank Engine stories while a curate at St Nicolas) and alabaster tombs dating to the 16th and 17th century.
While there are guides in attendance, there is also a self-conducted audio tour taking visitors from the lych gate through a comprehensive tour of each area of the church. Visitors may come straight into the church or follow the audio tour which begins at the lych gate.
The opening of the church on Saturday 13 September coincides with the Kings Norton Farmers’ Market, which runs from 9am to approximately 2pm.
Dogs can be brought into the church under appropriate supervision.
