Dedicated to St Peter this Grade II listed church is part of Chester Diocese in the Church of England. It has stood at the heart of Hale for more than 130 years. While its beautiful architecture makes it one of the village's best-known landmarks, its true purpose has always been to gather people together to worship God, grow in faith, and serve the local community.
Construction began in 1890 with the foundation stone laid on 29 November by Susan Joynson, wife of the church's principal benefactor, Richard Hampson Joynson. The church was dedicated by the Bishop of Chester on 16 June 1892 and was fully consecrated in 1897.
Designed by the Manchester architects Tate & Popplewell in an eclectic Gothic Revival style. St Peter’s is built mainly of buff and pale pink brick with terracotta detailing.
St Peter’s contains several outstanding examples of Victorian and early twentieth century church art. Look out for :-
• The stained glass windows
• The baptistry including the World War I memorial
• The pulpit and lectern
• The organ and choir stalls
• The high altar and sanctuary.
St Peter’s has retained much of its original character while adapting to the needs of the twenty first century. A peel of 8 chimes has been installed, the original ladder back rush seated chairs have been replaced with movable wooden chairs, accessibility has been improved and modern sound and live streaming systems now enable worship to reach far beyond the church walls.
