St. Wilfrid's Church is an important historical ancient building in Melling, Lancashire, with many interesting features. We are holding a Heritage Open Day on Saturday 12th September, from 11am to 3pm, to raise awareness of the building.

St. Wilfrid's Church is known as the 'Cathedral of the Lune Valley', being sited on a motte and bailey, in a strategic position above the road and river. The church dates from Norman times with more recent alterations in the Gothic style, being influenced by Ruskin. The organ, bells and clock are very good examples of their type.
Due to a low area of population, dwindling congregation, rising general running costs and sizeable repairs needed to the roof, windows, etc. the church is at risk of closure. A group of people from the community are trying to raise awareness of the plight of the church by organising a number of heritage events, including the Heritage Open Day. The day coincides with the centenary celebrations of Blackburn Diocese.
The church has recently received national press and media coverage, due to the discovery of a number of gold coins, which were donated anonymously in 2022. The Bishop of Blackburn and vicar see this as a 'seed of hope' for the future of the church.
The Heritage Open Day will include exhibitions, talks, performances, refreshments and the opportunity to look around this wonderful building which has been place of Christian worship for many hundreds of years.
