Stableyard Stories: Silverton Park Stables Open Days
Silverton Park Stables, The Old Stables Road, Silverton, Devon, EX5 4DE
Usually occupied by Landmark Trust holiday guests, join us to explore Silverton Park Stables on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September 2026 as part of Heritage Open Days. Entry is free and leaflets on the building's history and children’s activity sheets will be available on site.
Set amidst the rolling countryside of Devon, this striking building stands as a reminder of an ambitious vision begun in 1837 by George Francis Wyndham, the 4th Earl of Egremont.
Wyndham inherited the Silverton estate and set out to create a grand classical mansion, complete with an impressive stable block to house his carriages, horses, and staff. Designed by architect JT Knowles, the stables were intended to match the scale and elegance of the planned house. However, when the Earl died in 1845, the project was left unfinished, and the mansion was later demolished, leaving only the stable block behind.
Over the years, the building was used for agricultural purposes before being rescued in 1987 by the Landmark Trust. Thanks to dedicated supporters, it was carefully restored and brought back to life, opening in 2008.
As you explore, you’ll notice the grand portico, the spacious courtyard, and the sense of history embedded in every corner. We hope you enjoy discovering this unique place, where echoes of its equestrian past and grand ambitions still remain, and feel warmly welcomed during your visit.
