Stamford Corn Exchange
Broad Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire, PE9 1PX
The Corn Exchange was originally built in 1859 to host the indoor trading of farm produce, with the facility to accommodate theatrical productions and concert. In 1926 there was a serious fire which gutted the building, The Corn Exchange Company was formed by the issue of shares to raise money to pay for the restoration. The building had a variety of uses and slowly fell into a poor state, but continued to be used for some local amateur theatrical productions. In 1999 four local business put forward a business plan to restore the building and create a local entertainment venue. This was accepted by the owners and the Corn Exchange Theatre Company, a registered charity was formed. Over the next nine years the building was restored by volunteers supported by local businesses and an independent working theatre, with pop up shops and cafe created. The Georgian front elevation has also been restored to its original glory.
