The story of the infamous Bacup Highwaymen tells of a desperate gang of robbers executed in September 1827.

Their crimes were closely tied to social and economic hardship, as widespread disease, high unemployment, and the poor living conditions endured by many in the lower classes drove some impoverished people to highway robbery.
These robbers were often romanticised as people who challenged the wealthy and redistributed wealth, though their victims were usually chosen out of opportunity rather than principle. Did the poverty they faced drive them into crime?
