Visit this historic steamship, the last of the ‘Fresh Class’ water carriers that served the navy, delivering water to replenish steam turbines.

Welcome aboard to see what life was like on a 1940s steamship. SS Freshspring is the last remaining of 14 ‘Fresh Class’ water carriers built between 1939 and 1946 by the Lytham Shipbuilding and Engineering Company to act as water supply vessels - replenishing water used by steam turbines in warships. Freshspring has been moored in Bideford since 2016 and is being restored by Steamship Freshspring Charity.

Gangplank accessible by pushchairs and most wheelchairs onto foredeck. Bulkheads, steps and ladders restricts access to some areas of ship.
