Stories from the graveyard: working lives, talk and tour
West End Library & Community Hub, West End Customer Service Centre, Condercum Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE4 9JH
St James' Graveyard on Benwell Lane tells the story of the changing community of West Newcastle over the decades since it opened in the 1830s. As well as the impressive memorials to some of the wealthiest and most powerful families on Tyneside, also buried there are thousands of other local residents including pitmen, engineers, farmers, shopkeepers and nurses. Join us to hear some of their stories and visit some of their graves.
Meet in the community room at the West End Library for a short talk and film showing with refreshments. This will be followed by a tour of the graveyard focusing on the working lives of some of West Newcastle's residents.
