This year marks 200 years since Baptists first met for worship in Stratford. Come and visit our Church for guided or self-guided tours and learn about our history and contributions to the local community both in the past and the present day.

The Payton Street Baptist Church has continuously occupied its current site since 1835. The Baptists previously met at the home of its founder, James Cox, the timber merchant, at 8 – 9 High Street, now Waterstones Bookshop.

The Church is grade II listed and has the only original unfluted Doric Portico in Stratford, and unique stained glass and tapered windows. The adjoining schoolroom, added in 1861, now known as the Fellowship Hall, is used for various Church activities. In 1995, the Church underwent major refurbishment, including the insertion of a new Baptistry. In 1998, the neighbouring Welcombe Hall, formerly the Brethren Chapel, was purchased to provide additional space.

Visit us to learn more about the Church and the people that worshipped and worked here over the last two centuries. We will tell the stories of the working lives of the preachers and members of the congregation. The exhibition during our open days includes the James Cox Pulpit Bible presented to the Church in 1875, plus Church minute books, magazines, photographs and plans. Guided or self-guided tours are available and there is no need to book.

The Church will be open on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September from 1000 to 1600. Light refreshments will be available all day. There is on-site car parking.
