Swing Riots at The Great Hall - talks, music and mini drama

The Captain Swing Riots were a widespread uprising by workers in protest of agricultural mechanisation and harsh working conditions. The trials were held in The Great Hall.

10:15am – 10.45am Introducing the SWING Riots – Talk by Pete Doyle from East Woodhay Local History Society.
11:15am – 12 noon ‘SWING MOODS’ featuring music inspired by the SWING Riots presented by music group !nverse in conjunction with SWING poet Georgia Hilton.
12:15pm – 1pm The SWING Grand Assize and the Great Hall - Edward Fennell describes the scene in late December 1830 as 300 men are tried in the Great Hall for their involvement in the SWING riots followed by ROUGH JUSTICE FOR HENRY COOK, a playlet featuring the final meeting between convicted 19 year old Swing Rioter Henry Cook and his mother shortly before his execution on January 15th 1831.
1:30pm – 2pm SWING RIOTING in BOSMERE - A Swing Riots talk by Neil Spurgeon about local historians’ investigations into Swing in South East Hampshire.
2:15pm – 3pm Swing Riots and the ‘THE LANGUAGE OF LAW’ - Professor Christopher Mulvey talks about the legal language of the early 19th century as evidenced by the Swing GRAND ASSIZE· followed by ROUGH JUSTICE FOR HENRY COOK, a playlet featuring the final meeting between convicted 19 year old Swing Rioter Henry Cook and his mother before his execution on January 15th 1831.
3:15pm – 4pm ‘SWING MOODS’ featuring music inspired by the SWING Riots presented by music group !nverse in conjunction with SWING poe

Finding The Great Hall - Address: The Castle, Castle Ave, Winchester SO23 8UJ. This postcode will take you elsewhere, so please use SO23 8TP to find the Westgate pub on the mini roundabout at the end of Castle Avenue. Please note, there is no parking at The Great Hall. The nearest car park is only a 3-4 minutes’ walk away though - Tower Street Multi-storey. https://www.winchester.gov.uk/parking/parking-and-car-parks. To use the park and ride, the nearest park and ride bus stop is Westgate, which is a 2 minute walk to the Great Hall. We are also only a 10-minute walk from Winchester Railway Station. To find The Great Hall on foot, use postcode SO23 8TP to get to the mini roundabout by the Westgate pub, walk up the cobbled Castle Avenue with the Register Office on your left, past 2 white barriers (you can walk around them). The hall will be right in front of you across the courtyard.

The stone floor inside and cobbled ground outside the hall is uneven and care should be taken. Lift access required for shop, toilets and cafe.

The Great Hall is 800 years old and cannot be heated or cooled. Please dress for the weather, despite being inside!
