Opened in 1856 Teignmouth Old Cemetery became the main burial site for residents of Teignmouth and the surrounding area. The everyday stories of those buried here provide a remarkable alternative insight into the social history of a town going through rapid change and increasing affluence. Some stories extend even further afield through the experiences and impact which some people have had, perhaps somewhat surprisingly, nationally and internationally. So the tour will explore how everyday lives contributed to aspects as mundane as plumbing to the advent of ice-cream; or from the discovery of Troy to T.S. Eliot's journey to the Nobel prize. Or maybe you would be intrigued by the life of a 'low comedian' or surviving the Kabul disaster of 1842.
