Dr William Ackland, a nineteenth century Bideford doctor a talk by Liz Shakespeare
Dr William Ackland, one of the main characters in Liz Shakespeare’s book The Turning of the Tide, practised in Bridgeland Street from 1851 – 1893. His home is now the Con Club (formerly Conservative Working Men’s Club). Dr Ackland was born 200 years ago in 1825 and was the first Medical Officer of Health for Bideford. He played a big role in setting up the Dispensary on the Quay and the first isolation hospital on Alverdiscott Road.
In this talk, Liz will describe how she researched his life and work and will read extracts from her book.
