Talk: Saving the Cistern – the story of Higher Buxton’s first fresh water supply
Poole's Cavern Visitor Centre, Green Lane, Buxton, Derbyshire, SK17 9DH
The fountain on the marketplace of Higher Buxton was commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire in 1840 to provide fresh water for the residents. In addition to supplying essential drinking water, the fountain became the centrepiece of the annual wells dressing ceremony and is a prominent feature of the marketplace.
Join BCA's, Simon Fussell, for a talk and presentation to explore the development of the marketplace over the centuries, the significance of the fountain, including the street named after it, and the efforts of the Buxton Civic Association to restore this important Grade II monument, which has fallen into decline.
Buxton Civic Association (BCA) are Buxton's leading environmental and heritage charity. We own and manage 160-acres of woodland in Buxton, along with Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park.
