The Banqueting House at Gibside

Gibside, Burnopfield, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE16 6AA

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking preferred

Nestling in the forest, The Banqueting House stands in a grassy clearing looking down towards an octagonal pool and the Derwent Valley, in the highest part of Gibside Park, near the Column of British Liberty and Gibside chapel.

A rare chance to see inside The Banqueting House, a Gothic folly designed around 1750 by Daniel Garrett for wealthy coal mining magnate, George Bowes. Intended both to be looked at and to look out for, the folly was rescued from dereliction by the Landmark Trust and is now normally let for holidays. Experience the elegant space of the sitting room as you imagine the 18th-century ladies and gentlemen who were brought here on their tour of the estate.
After a picnic, they might refresh themselves with music, or stroll on the lawn around the building, enjoying the view of the lake and the grand panorama beyond. Walk down to explore the house, gardens and stableblock of Gibside (all in the care of the National Trust) to complete the experience of this once mighty estate with its famous landscape.

Admission is free and booking is preferred.

Information will be provided detailing the building's history including kids activity sheets.
