The Everyday Neolithic History of Thornborough Henges (Central & Southern Henges)

With two guided tours and a display of Neolithic equipment, this event demonstrates the incredible ability of Neolithic people to build this unique triple henge complex. The tours will help you understand the complex, which has features from the Early, Mid and Late Neolithic as well as later Bronze Age barrows (burial mounds) and a trackway and the people who built them. Near the southern henge is a rare early Neolithic triple ditch barrow and visitors will hear about how and why it was built and how it was instrumental in the positioning of the later henges. As well as hearing about how the henges were constructed visitors will learn more about their design and what makes them unique. Near the southern henge, the Bronze Age saw the construction of the now buried longest double pit alignment in the UK and the remains of the Centre Hill barrow. The tour will explain how these features were built and what was found when they were excavated. Tours take approx. one and a half hours. Throughout the event the Neolithic handling kit will be on display, so visitors can see what tools and everyday items were used when the henges were built, including antler picks shoulder blade shovels, animal skins, clothes, jewellery and fire-lighting kits. This event is run by English Heritage volunteers. The display may be restricted by the weather.

Conservation: There are currently conservation works happening at Thornborough Henges, so please take extra care when exploring the site. Please do not climb up the banks of the henges. You may find when you visit that there are some parts of the site that are cordoned-off or closed for safety while works are carried out.
