In 1871, the Prince of Wales succeeded Lord Hastings as the Honorary Colonel in Chief of the Norfolk Artillery Militia. The building was increasingly used by the Prince of Wales when the Artillery used South Denes for gunnery training.

On his visits to Great Yarmouth, he was often accompanied by Ms Lily Langtry who performed at either the Royal Aquarium or the Winter Gardens.
