The Knitting & Crochet Guild

This year we feature a collection of items highlighting knitting and crochet as occupations, both professionally and as part of a cottage industry.
Our shade card and yarn sample collections illustrate how yarn was sourced and purchased before the advent of online shopping. Local yarn shops were an essential part of the crafting community, and yarn shop workers a source of knowledge and inspiration. Yarn was often ' put aside' by the shopkeeper to help with household budgeting.
A number of our patterns and publications are stamped with the names of yarn shops, many long gone. Our pattern collection reflects the vast number of yarn manufacturers, spinners and designers. Our other publications including magazines, periodicals and part works, reflect the popularity of styles, yarns and techniques, tracing the industry over time.
Needles, hooks, tools and gadgets are an essential part of our collection. Many of our items have been home made for domestic use, whilst others are made by well known manufacturers.
Our knitted and crochet collections feature items made domestically to be sold- for example Irish Crochet motifs were made (often by children) as a cottage industry, assembled into larger pieces and sold as high end pieces.
Our Canal Crochet collection was made by someone living and working on the canal network.
Our 'designer' items including some pieces made by the designers themselves.

Directions:

The Collection is situated opposite Aldi in the centre of Slaithwaite in an former textile mill. The entrance is at the side of the building. Access is up a flight of stairs and is on the first floor.

The collection is situated up a flight of stairs. Please be aware that the floors are uneven. Arrangements can be made for parking near to the building if required.
