Ancient Egyptian, Mediterranean, Roman and medieval artefacts in Girton's intimate museum collection.

The Lawrence Room contains a collection of artefacts presented to Girton College by members and well-wishers over 150 years. Its formation was sparked by the discovery of a late Roman and early medieval cemetery in the college grounds in the 1880s, yielding pottery, glassware and grave goods. These were joined during the twentieth century by Egyptian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean collections, highlights being the first-century portrait mummy, Hermione; enigmatic 'eye idols' from Tell Brak, Syria; a collection of terracotta Tanagra figurines from Hellenistic Greece, and much more.

We want to help more Cambridge residents discover this intimate and eclectic museum. Pay us a visit and please share your feedback and suggestions about our display and how we might improve it. Before you leave, enjoy a coffee in the Social Hub and a walk through the tranquil flower-filled college grounds.
